They are of the walnut family, but unlike the others such as the Japanese walnuts, they do not produce edible seeds. Its spread spiky scales has earned its name "Fox's comb" or "Monkey's comb" in Japanese. Seeds grow between the spiky scales, and are carried far away by the wind.
